Mandikhatar is a growing suburb in Kathmandu. In just the last decade, the place has gone from a virtual farm field to a bustling mini-metropolis. Its growth has sparked a wave of new coffee shops, stores, restaurants, and more. I’ve discussed another place in the neighborhood previously, but I couldn’t wait to introduce you to this one. (I assure you, I do get around to other parts of Kathmandu!)
The Little Kitchen is a chill little diner located at Jana Marg Chowk in Mandikhatar. Opening in February of 2020, The Little Kitchen has carved out its spot in the middle of Mandikhatar as the choice place for meeting over food and drink. It serves a variety of items from sekuwa to chicken chili and Chow Mein. The prime specialties are Keema Noodles and Tibetan-style momos. I can attest to the superiority of both. I have never had Keema Noodles of such exquisite and powerful flavor.
The Little Kitchen also presents a great place to relax over some coffee, or catch up on some work while sipping a Coke or a Gorkha beer. You can also enjoy an apple or mint flavored hookah.
My favorite thing about The Little Kitchen, however, is the absolutely wonderful owners and staff. Hailing from Ripal village in the Okhaldhunga area, owners Lakpa Sonam and Mina Sherpa provide an extraordinarily welcoming environment. Pradeep Gurung and Sunil Tamang always serve with a smile or a laugh, and they are quick to complete your order no matter how busy. And as a testament to their kindness, everyone at The Little Kitchen looks after Kali.
Some time back, Kali appeared in the Jana Marg Chowk. Poor little Kali, a relatively small black dog, was homeless and unwell. The Little Kitchen crew came together and found some help for her. They even administered medications to her after her initial treatment until she regained her health. Now, Kali still happily lives in the area, but Lakpa Sonam, Mina, Pradeep, and Sunil see to it that she always has enough food and water. Indeed, on any given day, strolling past the restaurant, you will find this adorable little dog sleeping comfortably, head often mounted on the snack she is saving for later.
Restaurants of all different types and flavors fill every nook and cranny of Kathmandu. If you are looking for a unique, almost meditative atmosphere, with great food and better people, The Little Kitchen is the place to visit! See below for hours, map, and contact information and a free deal!
