Another fantastic addition has come to my neighborhood here in Mandikhatar, Kathmandu. Located just thirty seconds from the Ring Road, and literal meters before the entrance to Hams Hospital, is Le Patio Restaurant. Perched atop a hill, the outer terrace offers exquisite views of Mandikhatar from the comfort of cushioned seats. I first became aware of the place from afar; at night it is vibrantly lit making it visible from all across the area. The street at which you must turn to reach the restaurant from Dhumbarahi Marg can be a little tricky to find as it has a wall on both corners and is rather narrow, and the restaurant is not visible from there (look for the pet shop for the turn). Never fear, however, as Le Patio has abundant parking for cars or bikes.
There is ample parking in the front (photos by me or given to me by Le Patio)
As soon as you enter, you will know you have found yourself in a classy place. The architecture of the building is beautifully done. Adjacent to the parking area sits a colorful waterfall and fountain. Having opened on November 4 this past year, the facilities are well-polished and tastefully adorned. Patrons can opt to sit inside a cozy dining room, or take a table outside with the exceptional view. And don’t worry if it is cold out, Le Patio sports several kerosene stand-up heaters that push the chill away. If you bring the kids, Le Patio accommodates them too in the form of a playground replete with slides, swings, and a trampoline. Whether your meal of choice is breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Le Patio opens at 7am everyday and closes at 9:30pm—early enough to start your day, or just late enough to enjoy the fading sun followed by the twinkling lights of the valley.

The comfort and appeal of the physical space is only outshined by the menu. Le Patio has something for everyone—big or small, veg or nonveg, spicy or smooth. For the meat-eaters, one of its most popular dishes is its Goat Shank. Marinated with Himalayan spice, this unique offering melts in your mouth. Slow cooked to perfection, it comes with Tomato and Red Wine sauce, accompanied by a side of local Marsi Rice and sautéed vegetables. The other big seller, the Herbs Crusted Goat Chop, is seasoned with Himalayan spices, slow cooked, and then dipped in mustard paste, bread crumbs, Parmesan cheese, and Pistachio flavors. While I loved both of these, my personal favorite is the Spicy Fried Chicken with Kimchi. (I am biased a bit as I love Kimchi with chicken—especially spicy chicken!) Crispy on the outside and tender in the middle, chilly spices coat the chicken and it is served with tongue-tingling, but not too hot, Kimchi. It is not easy to find good Kimchi in Nepal—but I did here. For other tastes, customers can choose from Chicken Momos, Chicken Wings, Pasta with Meatballs, Spicy Pork Pasta, and meat Pizzas, among others. Le Patio also recently added a sandwich menu to its repertoire.

For vegetarian diners, there are several salad options that provide various vegetables, avocado, and cheeses to choose from. Entrees for vegetarians include Veg Momos, Vietnamese Spring Rolls, Potato Wedges, the Veg Sandwich, Mushroom Soup, Siciliana Pasta, Mushroom and Sun-Dried Tomato Aglio Oglio, a Veggie or Caprese Pizza, Ricotta and Spinach Cannelloni, and Baked Eggplant.

To accompany the food, there are a host of beverages to choose from, including soft drinks, hard drinks, shakes and lassis, coffees or teas, beer, and cocktails. For those who like a little nip with their meal, Le Patio hosts a fully stocked bar with name brands like Old Durbar, Jameson, Chivas Regal, Grey Goose, and many more. It features two brands of wine—Jacob’s Creek and Robertson—and also several specialty cocktails such as the Mango Brew, Khukri Robusta, and Margarita, among others. You can select local beer like Barahsinghe or Gorkha, or imports such as Budweiser or Tuborg. After eating, sit back and enjoy an apple Hukka with a Cappuccino, Caramel Macchiato, or Hot Chocolate.
Le Patio did not forget the children when it comes to food or drink. When Goat Shanks are on the menu, parents do not want to be forced to share a pizza with the kids. Le Patio offers a full Kid’s Menu of child-size portions. The little ones can pick from Chicken Tenders or Chicken Popcorn, Pasta dishes, Pizza, Sandwiches (even Peanut Butter and Jelly!), and veg or nonveg Rice Bowls. To wash down these dishes, Le Patio will make the kids their own specialty drinks. There is the Mickey Mouse, Blue Cinderella, Sponge Bob Square Pants, and the Spiderman.
